Poona Ford Decommits From Louisville, Sets Visit To Texas

When Charlie Strong left for Texas, you knew Louisville was going to lose a couple of key recruits. It always happens – at every school – when there’s a coaching changeover. First, it was George Rushing, the talented 3-star Fort Lauderdale wide receiver, then it was Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) teammates Kavaris Harkless and Isaiah Ford (also both 3-star players). There’s also a handful of others who remain “soft commits” and who are waiting to either speak to Bobby Petrino and his new staff or take another visit to campus. But the news that just leaked out about Poona Ford is a huge blow to the Cards. Ford, a 4-star defensive tackle from Hilton Head (SC), was the best overall prospect in Louisville’s class and was a surefire impact lineman at the college level. We had his coach, BJ Payne, on our radio show back in October and he called Ford the “single most talented player I’ve ever been around.” And while losing Ford in itself is a massive blow to the program moving forward, there was some troubling news that accompanied his decommitment.

Immediately after Ford announced his decision, all the various recruiting outlets began to report that he was offered by Texas (and Charlie Strong) and will take a visit there in the coming weeks. This comes directly on the heels of Strong offering a scholarship to current Louisville commit, Chris Nelson. Another massive DT prospect from Lakeland (FL), Nelson was supposed to visit Louisville on January 17th, but now that visit is in question. Leaving Louisville for Texas is understandable and certainly within the lines of logic and reason. After all, it’s Texas.
